In the last few
years there have been many advances in our understanding of how the
brain, the body and emotions are connected. Brain plasticity is just
one example of new science that brings hope to helping people suffering
from traumatic stress, addiction etc.
Understanding
plasticity literally changes the landscape of therapy and making change
in the loves of adults, it brings major hope to the work in new and
exciting ways.
We are learning - and learning to accept
- more and more about how trauma and stress effect the
body. The brain actually develops differently when under ongoing
stress. How does this effect how we might set goals for learning
environments? How would this effect approaches and goals in therapy?
- Could SEL ( social emotional literacy ( combined with some world view and greiving skills prevent future substance abuse and addiction, prevent 'trauma' and reduce suffering around traumatic events?
- Why is yoga so
effective in helping people with depression?
- How does an
understanding of brain development help us plan learning for teens?
- Is trauma or
stress a factor in ADHD and other similar diagnoses?
-~-
Note
on the terms - . We note
that the term
"Emotional Literacy" is used widely in the
education system. There are
many ways to refer to this package of skills. Choices around
language to describe the issue
will be
discussed at the
conference - we will try to explore options and gather consensus.
C.
Steiner:
"Emotional
Literacy is made up of ‘the ability to understand your emotions,
the ability to listen to others and empathize with their emotions, and
the ability to express emotions productively. To be emotionally
literate is to be able to handle emotions in a way that improves your
personal power and improves the quality of life around you. Emotional
literacy improves relationships, creates loving possibilities between
people, makes co-operative work possible, and facilitates the feeling
of community. "
Daniel
Goleman:
"Emotional
Intelligence refers to being intelligent about
our
emotional life: more aware, better able to disturbing emotions, more
sensitive to the emotions of others, - and able to put all that
together to create effective, nourishing interactions with others. ...
the good news is that all these skills are
learned - and learnable ."
